‘I’ve always had a phenomenal love of colour… So that’s where the spot paintings came from ... It was just a way of pinning down the joy of colour’ – Damien Hirst

Damien Hirst is now seen as the most prominent member of the group known as the Young British Artists (or YBAs), who dominated the art scene in Britain during the 1990s. Notable for his energy and inventiveness, Hirst has produced a dazzling series of challenging works as installations, sculpture, paintings and drawings that have propelled him to worldwide fame. His array of spot woodcut prints for Manifold Editions are essays in pure colour. At the same time they reference families of pharmacological drugs, an aspect of his well-documented obsession with medicine's attempts to control and arrest bodily decay, itself linked to themes of death, science, religion and art in his work as a whole.

Hirst was awarded the Turner Prize in 1995 and his contribution to British art over the last two and a half decades was acknowledged in the 2012 major solo retrospective at Tate Modern, London. He lives in Devon and has studios in Gloucester and London.
